Losing files and software programs

It depends on the method you use to update. If you wait for windows update to offer it to you, then no, all of your programs and data will (should) remain undisturbed. I STRONGLY recommend that you backup your system first, just in case. Macrium Reflect is what I use. Aomei.com and Easeus. com also provide free, well regarded backup programs.

I usually use the downloaded Os Betas, available on the insider program.
As they are really only on a test basis, I choose to make a fresh install each time. I have Windows 10 installed, with all my regular programs and settings, on the same ssd.
At the start, you are asked if you wish to keep your data. I always select keep. To date, I have not lost any programs or settings.
