Here's the need... I have outside bird feeders with camera. As soon as I move the feeders outside home about 40ft from WiFi router they lose connection. I then added extender inside home which is only 20ft from feeders. WiFi shows 4+ bars

My network setup-cable modem w/WiFi in home
Wired from inside home to detached garage with Wifi router as AP. It's a metal garage so signal is weak outside garage

I'm thinking to add outside AP wired to garage router
Open to suggestions which to buy and if this will work?

Son-in-law has same feeder 100+ FT away from home and it works. another idea what could be interfering with signal, but other wireless work OK outside around home. I'm waiting for another feeder as current could be faulty???

thanks

Why not try as MESH, I have a spare router (not extender) configured as MESH which I placed at the garage outside .. maybe in your case place it somewhere near to the bird feeder :)

Great idea except it'd be exposed to the weather. I'm installing TP-link EAP-650-outdoor

Change the extenders or access points to a point to point wireless bridge operating towards the bird feeder.

This is what ISPs normally use to connect buildings.

How it works

One small directional antenna near house/garage.

A small directional receiver placed near the feeder.

A concentrated wireless beam rather than a Wi-Fi bubble.

This avoids:

Metal Interference

Signal Scatter

Neighbor Wi-Fi Noise

Products to look for

Ubiquiti NanoBeam/LiteBeam

TP-Link CPE 210 /

They are cheaper than other mesh networks and can handle 500+m.

Even more unique (Low-Cost Hack)

If you don't want new hardware:

Use an old router + Pringles Can Waveguide

Seriously, people use cylindrical metal cans to transform an antenna into a directional antenna.

Steps:

Move old router to garage window.

Add the homemade directional reflector made of can/metal sheet.

Aim directly at feeder.

Boost real-world range by 2-3x.

Why these extensions outperform extenders and mesh?

Extenders repeat noise.

Mesh receives weak signals.

Directional beam focuses power exactly where you need it.

Pro-level insight (what most miss)

The bird camera has tiny antennae as well as low transmission power. Thus, even as Wi-Fi appears robust, the camera cannot speak back. Directional setup sets both the direction and the opposite end, not just the download.
