Microsoft has been actively promoting the usage of Copilot, an innovative technology meant to improve user experiences across many Windows devices. However, several customers recently reported an unexpected occurrence: the automatic installation of the Copilot app following a Microsoft Edge upgrade in March.

If you are using Edge version 123.0.2420.65, you may be affected by this vulnerability. Users reported that after updating Microsoft Edge, the Copilot software appeared on their desktops without their knowledge. Understandably, the Windows community was worried about privacy and device control.

Addressing these concerns, Microsoft informed consumers that a solution is in the works. The fundamental cause of the problem is an incorrect installation of a package known as Microsoft Chat Provider for Copilot in Windows by Edge version 123.0.2420.65 on Windows devices.

While the Copilot app may appear in the Installed Apps area, it should be noted that it is not completely functioning due mainly to this faulty installation. Microsoft underlined that the package does not run any code or processes, nor does it gather or send device data. Instead, it aims to prepare certain Windows machines for future Copilot use.

To address this issue, Microsoft is currently working on a patch that will be included in an upcoming Edge release. This repair mostly affects Windows 11 versions 23H2, 22H2, and 21H2, as well as Windows 10 version 22H2.

Despite Microsoft's enthusiasm for promoting Copilot adoption, the company remains committed to respecting user autonomy and privacy. While Copilot may offer significant benefits, such as enhanced productivity and intuitive user experiences, its deployment should be a deliberate choice made by users.
