Setting up a new laptop for my son who does not have a Microsoft account. Do we need to create one, or can we log in/set up with his Gmail? If so, does he lose any benefits or use of Windows or Microsoft?

If you have previously used the GMAIL account of his, just continue to use it and never register new Microsoft account :)

Some features like Windows Hello and certain security features require a Microsoft account. If your son is into gaming, having an Xbox account linked with his Microsoft account might also be useful.

You can create a new local user "without a MS account" option and use a local password to login

Having a Microsoft account unlocks several benefits like:
1. Syncing Settings: Your son's settings, themes, and passwords can sync across multiple devices
2. Microsoft Store Access: He can download and purchase apps, games, and other content
3. OneDrive: Free cloud storage for backing up files
4. Office Online: Access to free online versions of Word, Excel, and more
5. Parental Controls: Better control over what he can access and usage monitoring
It's worth setting up for the long-term benefits, especially as he starts using more features. yet you can also go for Xploit Machine's suggestion

Good luck with the setup! Also, take some time to go through the privacy settings to customize them according to your preferences. If he’s a minor, setting up family features can help you manage his activity and screen time.
