Microsoft Account with new Windows laptop

Setting up a new laptop for my son who does not have a Microsoft account. Do we need to create one, or can we log in/set up with his Gmail? If so, does he lose any benefits or use of Windows or Microsoft?

If you have previously used the GMAIL account of his, just continue to use it and never register new Microsoft account

You can create a new local user "without a MS account" option and use a local password to login
