I recently installed an optical drive and file explorer does not show it but the device manager shows it with a current driver.
What's going on here?

Mine sometimes doesn't show until I click This PC in the Navigation panel then it will show in the right panel.

It was checked, I unchecked and did a restart, no change.
Clicking on "This PC" does show it in the right pane but it would be nice if it would also show in the left pane with its drive letter.

Look in the disk management if your drive even has a letter assigned to it. Since it appears in the device manager but not in Windows explorer, this might just be the ticket....

just an idea...

Mine does if it has a disc in it.

Solution;

1. Insert any disc (CD/DVD) which has data in it
2. Type diskmgmt.msc in RUN Command
3. See if any drive letter assigned (if not assign, assign manually any other letter eg. F,G,H and above if you have not occupied it)
4. Open File Explorer and see if the drive is shown

Important Note - Sometimes File Explorer will not show drive letter if there's no disc in the drive

I have a couple USB Optical Disc Drives, not expensive, last one was about $35 at WalMart. Handy to have when visiting clients for testing issues with their internal drives. One is a Dell and the other an LG but there's also Lite-On.
