How to add desktop icons

Hi. In windows 10, if Idownloaded an app, I would get a desktop icon. I don't get them now. Is there an easy way to get them without tryin gto find the folder on my C drive and dragging it as a desktop icon? For example I have an FTP server FileZilla and a sync folder app SyncBackFree. Can see FileZilla on the start but can't do it by right clicking the desktop and adding it that way.

Dragging from Start/All Apps ? (May be you need to switch in start menu from the "other view" (don't know how it is called; the one with the "pinned" and "recommended" sections).
