Google is experimenting with port randomization in Chrome to improve browsing security. This feature attempts to improve user security against network-based attacks, which is a major step given the growing danger landscape of malware and cyberattacks.

Port randomization is a complex security mechanism that selects random ports for IP/TCP communications. This hinders hackers' attempts to exploit vulnerabilities using port scanning techniques.

Google is working together with Microsoft to smoothly integrate this functionality into Windows. However, the implementation has not been without challenges. A Windows flaw resulted in excessive port reuse, reducing the effectiveness of port randomization. This bug was fixed in the 22H2 release and then backported to previous versions.

While still in the experimental phase, the EnableTcpPortRandomization functionality is turned off by default, allowing developers to fine-tune its implementation. Once completely deployed, it promises to provide an additional layer of defense against hostile network activity.

Furthermore, Chrome Network Service now includes its own sandbox, which strengthens its security foundation. Stay tuned for updates when these advances are implemented, guaranteeing a safer browsing experience for everyone.
