What is this and can I remove it. This is part of my toolbar. Also there is an item to the left of this.

This has not had a reply so I will upload a better immage. Hopfuly a reply now. Also the icon to the left. second desktop. Can this be removed? what is the purpose of it? If I create a second and change the background. The background of the first changers. Moving shortcuts on one changes on the other. Seems a bit pointless.

Agreed. You got your cloud service named Onedrive running. I personally have uninstalled any cloud service there is and comes with Windows because I never use it anyway. My files do not belong on a computer which I don't know who has access to. That is why I have external drives.

Just uninstall it via Programs & Features section in Control Panel if unused .. It's OneDrive ..
