How to hide word count

How do I stop Word from calculating my word count on a doc in Windows 11? "Word count" is unchecked in the task bar, but it keeps trying to calculate and slows down my edits to a doc.

Haven't seen the problem but it may help to know which version of Word is involved.

Generally, to turn off word count in Microsoft Word, we can right-click the status bar and deselect Word Count from the pop-up menu. Try if this works, I am on Office 365 and works fine. However, word counting will affect system performance

I've already deselected Word Count from the menu in the status bar. I'm running Microsoft Office Home & Business 2021. I'm dying to lose this auto-tracking while working on a long document.
